Mana’o Music
The Vision
The vision of Mana’o Music app was made as a way to not only listen to Hawaiian music, but take us there, or remind us of our favorite trip to Hawaii. The final designs for the Mana’o Music app were created for everyone to discover new Hawaiian music.
The Challenge
Everyone loves great music! It helps with healing, and fuels the soul of others. While my heart will be forever in Hawaii, I wanted to create a music app to share all my favorite recording artists into one, so I made this for me!
Customer Insights
Since I was already creating this app for myself, I wanted to see if people experience listening to music the same way that I do. To my surprise, I found that most consumers have similar experiences to myself. I wanted to ask people face to face to gauge their expressions and collect honest feedback. While shopping in the electronics department at Target, I came across a few potential participants that had an interest in being included in my research. Those participants were asked the following questions.Since I was already creating this app for myself, I wanted to see if people experience listening to music the same way that I do. Customer Maps
I wanted to understand the user’s needs and what drives them to listen to music. So I created a journey map for various users that includes a description of complex evaluation for each participant. Below illustrates the stages, services and touch points through a user’s journey.
Personas
User persona represents what the user will need from the Mana’o Music app. Aggregated user personas will help me to determine how and what challenges will be utilized to enhance the design. My approach is to ask various questions to different participants and evaluate their responses.
Wireframes
The Mana’o Music app was built with each section being designed for mobile. The whole process involved creating prototypes of the application using a prototyping tool called InvisionApp. These prototypes were tested by users so that I could get initial design feedback. After the first round of testing, I made changes to the prototypes that reflected changes desired by the participants. The main take away from testing was that the playing loop feature was not visually clear enough for the user to actually understand how it worked. Next, I conducted a usability test with 4 different participants using paper prototyping. After incorporating their feedback, I ran one last user test with a revised version of the InvisionApp prototype. With their comments, I made final revisions to the mobile wireframes. Lastly, I polished all final screens and made an interaction prototype in an app called Principle.
Moodboards
Creating a moodboard helped me to identify what colors, cultural references, and visual imagery users connect with Hawaiian Music. The resulting moodboard helped me gain the necessary inspiration to create the look and feel for the Mana’o Music app.
